OUR VIEW: Good game

AT ISSUE: Cardinal football fans showed pride by staying until final score

Saturday's football game against University at Buffalo started strong and ended beautifully. Not only did the final scoreboard show a Ball State University win of 49-14, but the fans still filled the stands during the final minutes.

In recent years fans started filtering out about halftime, leaving a handful of die-hards to witness the end of losing games. During the last 10 seasons the Cardinals lost 80 out of 117 games.

If it was a close score, the stands may have been half full. But Saturday, Ball State had a winning team on the field and an excited crowd in the stands that cheered until the last minute. They weren't there simply because it was a blow out; they were there to watch every last play of a team that deserved a crowd to celebrate the final score.

Of course, not everyone stayed, but there was no mass exodus of bored, spiritless fans. That's how all of Ball State's games should be this season. The football team is showing it isn't the laughing stock of the Mid-American Conference, and fans are responding. For the first time in years, people are seriously discussing the possibility of Ball State going to a bowl game or playing in the MAC championship.

And the fans are going to be there the whole way if Saturday's game was any indication. That's how it should be. Don't miss a minute of this breakout, turnaround season. Attend games and stay the whole time. Ball State has a real, competitive football team and anything could happen during a game.

This might just be one strong season, or it could be the start of a whole new way of playing and looking at Ball State football. Don't miss it either way.
