Going into the Intercollegiate Tennis Association All-American Qualifying and Pre-qualifying Tournament Saturday, senior Jarrod Epkey gave junior Jose Perdomo one piece of advice.
"Do your thing, just play tennis," he said.
Perdomo made it into the fourth round, before losing to University of Arizona senior Bruno Alcala, 6-3 7-6(3). After a bye in the first round, Perdomo won against Greg Anderson from Morehead State University, 7-6(4), 3-6, 6-4, in the second round and Santa Clara University Jay Wong, 6-4,6-4, in his third round.
Perdomo said his nerves were getting the best of him at the start of the tournament.
"I started shaky, nervous and tense," he said. "I started to get going, and get into the groove, then I was fine."
Perdomo won the singles consolation championship of the Ball State Invitational to open the season, but he said he went into preparing for this tournament differently.
"I came here not knowing who I was going to play, or that I had the capability to play at this level," he said. "Then at the end of this tournament I am going to leave with confidence knowing I can compete with the best in the country."
