Grille damaged in fire

909 Grille is temporarily closed after a fire damaged the building early Tuesday morning. The fire appeared to have started in the kitchen where firefighters found a pot on top of a running stove, David Miller, Muncie Fire Department chief inspector, said. The alarm went off at 4:47 a.m. and all trucks left the scene at about 8:30 a.m.

The kitchen sustained smoke, fire and water damage, he said, but the rest of the building also had some smoke damage.

The fire appears to have been an accident, Miller said, and there were no signs of forcible entry.

"This really doesn't happen very often," Miller said. "A lot of businesses have protocol where they check on these things before they leave and maybe it was just an oversight."

Firefighting efforts were hampered by the height of the building, Miller said.

The fire was on the top floor, and a crew of firefighters had to go pick up a snorkler truck to gain access, Miller said. The snorkler has been out of commission for budgetary reasons for about two years, Chief Gary Lucas said.
