A hip-hop artist who has collaborated with the likes of Eminem and 50 Cent will make his Muncie debut tonight in Irving Gym. The Omega Psi Phi fraternity and the University Program Board will present Lil Scrappy at 9 p.m.
The fraternity has been working to coordinate the event for more than a year, Andrico Spates, Omega Psi Phi member and coordinator of the event, said. Students have expressed the desire to see national recording artists come to campus, he said, so when it came time to think of ideas for the fraternity's week of events, bringing a national act to Muncie seemed like a logical choice.
The group looked at several artists in their price range and felt that Lil Scrappy would draw the biggest response from the students, Spates said.
Lil Scrappy is signed to producer and performer Lil Jon's record label, BME Recordings. Lil Scrappy and Lil Jon collaborated on the singles "Head Bussa," "Wat U Gon' Do" and "Gangsta Gangsta."
Omega Psi Phi's adviser, Derick Virgil, said the fraternity members were committed to bringing the rapper to campus. Several of the organization's members are graduating this year and wanted to do something big during their last semester at Ball State University, he said.
Jason Davies, a graduate assistant for UPB, said Spates approached the board about helping co-sponsor and plan the concert. The board members unanimously agreed to help with funding and planning of the event. Part of the mission of UPB is to develop multicultural events, and the board saw the concert as a good way to fulfill its mission, he said.
"[We thought] it would be a good event to bring out a diverse crowd," he said. "Now would be as good of a time as any with all the issues surrounding the multicultural center."
Student ticket prices have been lowered from $27 to $15 and are available at the Worthen box office until 5 p.m. Tickets will be available for $27 between 5 p.m. and 9 p.m. at Marsh on McGalliard Road. Spates said it is yet to determined whether tickets will be sold at Irving Gym prior to and during the event.
"We would like to see a sold-out crowd and a positive response from the entire student body," Davies said.
