Indiana University names president

Indiana University trustees named Michael McRobbie, one of the schools' top academic officers, as its 18th president Thursday.

McRobbie, IU's interim provost since January 2006, will replace President Adam Herbert, who announced more than a year ago amid criticism from faculty members that he would not seek a contract renewal. McRobbie's choice was not a surprise as it was widely reported that he would be Herbert's successor.

McRobbie, 56, a native of Australia who arrived at IU in 1997 as vice president for information technology and chief information officer, was considered a rising star at IU, which has 98,000 students on eight campuses.

"Indiana University is at a vital crossroads in its history," McRobbie said in a prepared statement. "Our enduring missions will not change. We will continue to provide an excellent education and conduct first-rate research. And we have a third mission, engagement through economic development and community service, but it relies on our successful execution of the first two."
