Chapter suspends member

Delta Tau Delta man injured sophomore in November incident

Ball State University senior Chad Stickley has been suspended from Delta Tau Delta fraternity for striking sophomore Zach Holsinger on Nov. 11 outside the chapter's house, Interfraternity Council officials said.

Delta Tau Delta President Joel Sheets said the chapter's honor board recommended removing Stickley for conduct unbecoming of a member of the fraternity. After its own investigation, Delta Tau Delta members voted 35-2 in favor of the suspension, he said.

Stickley refused to comment.

"The Ball State chapter worked closely with the university, police and our national headquarters during the investigation," Sheets said. "This unfortunate event has strengthened the chapter's working relationship with both the university and our national headquarters. We are on the road to improving our relations with the university and the Muncie community."

Cara Luyster, assistant director of the Office of Student Life, said November's altercation and investigation has made her and her office work closely with the Delta Tau Delta leadership and the IFC to educate members of the greek community about risk and crisis management. She said people should not form negative opinions about the fraternity and other greek organizations because of one incident.

"As a university administrator I believe it is important that people gather as much information as possible and always educate themselves on a situation before making an opinion," Luyster said. "If people have [negative] viewpoints or have knowledge of another situation, I would encourage them to speak with me or the Interfraternity Council."

Sheets said Stickley's suspension means he is denied the rights and privileges of fraternity membership. Stickley cannot attend chapter meetings, vote, hold office or participate in rights, functions or activities, he said.
