A giant pair of scissors appeared, an orange ribbon was cut and Ball State University President Jo Ann Gora declared the Bookmark Caf+â-¬ officially open.
Although the caf+â-¬ has been open for business since January, the official grand opening was Wednesday afternoon.
Students, faculty and staff gathered to receive free cups of Seattle's Best coffee and enjoy a festive atmosphere as Ball State student Chase Overbeeke strummed his guitar and sang songs by John Mayer, Howie Day and Keith Urban.
Many students came to try the caf+â-¬'s food, which includes sandwiches, salads, desserts and coffees.
Junior Jenni Uebelhack sampled the Olde Tavern Club, had her first taste of Jones soda and finished off the meal with a cup of coffee and a chocolate and peanut butter caramel dessert bar.
"I don't usually eat on campus at all," Uebelhack said. "But after this I might start."
The caf+â-¬ is intended not only a place to eat but as a place to promote learning, socializing and studying and improve the overall quality of life on campus, Gora said. Although it took more than two years for the caf+â-¬ to become a reality, many Ball State students believe that the caf+â-¬'s location is definitely convenient. According to Gora, 4,600 people visit Bracken Library each day.
"The location is great," sophomore Katie Williams said. "It's right in the library and I'm here all the time."
Liz Poore, project manager for the cafe and assistant director of operations for Dining, agreed the location was convenient, especially since students can use their meal cards or credit or debit cards to make a purchase.
Poore, who helped established the caf+â-¬'s menu, made decisions based on a student and staff opinion survey and by reading national publications and visiting coffee shops. She also tried to create an environment that would give people a sense of community.
"The atmosphere is great," Sarah Schiffli said. "I've been coming here all week for lunch because the food's a little different."
