Men's BasketballTonight's 7 p.m. game for the Ball State University men's basketball team against Northern Illinois University is still on.
According to Chris Taylor, the director of communications & marketing and the team's sports information director, the team is still playing, it's just a matter of whether or not they'll be able to come back to Muncie after the game. Taylor said that the team might stay in Dekalb, Ill. for an extra night, just to wait out the storm.
WLBC's broadcasting team is in DeKalb, Ill., and will broadcast tonight's men's basketball game against Northern Illinois. Pregame will begin at 7:30 p.m.
Men's TennisBall State University's Men's Tennis Coach Bill Richards said he cannot remember the last time he missed a day of work because of weather related problems before Tuesday.
The Muncie YMCA, where the Cardinals practice, was closed on Tuesday so the team had to cancel practice Richards said.
"Even if the Y was open, with the wind and horrible travel conditions, I would have probably cancelled practice," Richards said.
Senior Joe Epkey said that Richards called around 10:30 a.m. to tell him that practice was canceled.
"It's not worth the drive out there since we had a good day of practice [Monday]," Epkey said.
The Cardinals plan on practicing Wednesday Richards said. However, he said the team must wait to see if the weather is better and if the YMCA is open.
"We just have to wait until it allows us to get back to normal," Richards said.
The team has no policy for weather related problems Richards said. The weather can affect the tennis team more than other Ball State teams, he said.
"Since we are off campus, we can't really just walk to the gym," Richards said.
Epkey said that he was happy to have classes canceled Tuesday. He said that he plans to stay inside his house and relax.
"It was great," Epkey said. "I usually have class at 8 on Tuesday and Thursday, so it's nice to get to sleep in and not have to get up at 7."
Epkey lives with his brother Jarrod Epkey, who also plays on the tennis team.
Jarrod Epkey missed the last three weeks of competition because of lower back problems. Joe Epkey said his brother's back is not hurting as much any more and he is starting to get back to normal activity.
"I hope it's good," Joe Epkey said. "Because he is going to shovel."
Men's VolleyballHeavy snow fall and single digit wind chills, which caused Ball State University to cancel classes, didn't stop the Cardinals' volleyball team from practicing inside Worthern Arena Tuesday morning.
Two days before Ball State is scheduled to play Mercyhurst College in Erie, Penn. coach Joel Walton said the team needed the practice.
"It wasn't bad coming in this morning," Walton said. "We are ready, and it was important for us to practice today, because usually the day before a match is a light practice."
Erie, Penn. is approximately 384 miles from Muncie.
Walton said the match is still scheduled to be played, and could only be canceled by the school's athletic directors.
"As far as I know we are good to go," Walton said. "If it would be unsafe to travel, then the match would be canceled."
In addition, Walton said the team plans to leave an hour earlier for its match against Mercyhurst, because of the road conditions. However, he didn't know if the team was going to take any other safety precautions driving to Pennsylvania.
"We just get in our charter bus and trust our professional drivers to do their job," Walton said.
Currently, the Cardinals are unsure if they will practice Wednesday, and Walton said the decision would be based on what the university does.
"Our plan right now is if Ball State is open we are practicing and if they are closed we aren't going to practice."
Women's Swimming and DivingThe winter weather didn't stop the Ball State University women's swimming and diving team from leaving Muncie to travel to the Mid-American Conference Championships today.
"We're on the road and it's quite and adventure," co-coach Bob Thomas said in a phone interview. "You can't see more than 200-yards in front of you from the wind, but the road is clear for the most part. As long as everyone is cautious on the road, we'll be fine."
The team left for Ypsilanti, Mich. around 1:30 p.m. for the three day meet.
Women's BasketballSnow didn't keep the Ball State University women's basketball team from getting on the bus to go play their game against the University of Toleto.
The team's Sports Information Director Matt McCollester said the bus was going slow and he didn't know when the team would arrive.
