Snow left Muncie in decent shape

Crews expect roads to be cleared by Thursday

After Tuesday's blizzard, Muncie remained relatively unscathed, said Brian Lipscomb, Sheriff's Captain for Delaware County Emergency Management.

There weren't any reports of severe property damage, and there wasn't an unusual amount of traffic accidents, he said. There was one power outage in northern Muncie on Wednesday morning, but the power was turned back on after a few hours, he said.

"It was pretty uneventful for this kind of storm," Lipscomb said. "All in all, people used their heads and did the right thing. They stayed off the roads and let us do our work."

Cleanup efforts did not require much extra help, he said. Muncie did not receive enough snow for Homeland Security to provide emergency aid, he said. Homeland Security requires 15 inches, and Muncie received about 12 inches.

"The county and city governments did real good work with what they had," Lipscomb said. "Some overtime was paid, but we used our resources wisely."

The roads should be cleared by the end of the day, but outside the city's boundaries might take longer, he said. Delaware County Emergency Management declared a state of emergency for unincorporated Delaware County at 12:15 p.m. Tuesday.

"We're going to be in good shape [today]," Lipscomb said. "In the far reaches [of Muncie] they're still fighting to get the roads open."

Cleanup crews are experiencing difficulty with eastbound and westbound roads in open areas because the wind is creating deep drifts, he said.

Tuesday's blizzard wasn't the worst storm in Muncie's recent history, Lipscomb said. The ice storm in late December 2004 and early January 2005 was more severe because of the amounts of property damage, he said.

"The [2004] ice storm was much more of a major event," he said. "This one was just like having dirt in your eye. It lasts for a day or so and then you move on."

There haven't been any reports of severe property damage and there haven't been an unusual amount of traffic accidents, he said. There has been one power outage so far in northern Muncie Wednesday morning, but the power was turned back on after a few hours, he said.
