Police close case of missing BSU student

Derek Brewington was staying at NYC hostel

Senior Derek Brewington, whose friends and family have not heard from him in more than a week, stayed at a New York City hostel, university spokesman Layne Cameron said.

Derek's father, Dan Brewington, said he spoke to a man in charge of the hostel, who confirmed that 22-year-old Derek Brewington had been there for the past eight days.

"We were able to find enough information to be able to determine where he is, or at least was," Dan Brewington said. No one in the family has spoken to Derek Brewington yet, his father said.

"We are much better now that we know he is at least physically OK," Dan Brewington said. "Obviously we'd like to get him home and get him any kind of help he might need, but that's kind of up to him."

Cameron said university police determined Brewington was acting on his own when he sold his white Buick Century to a dealership in Indianapolis on Jan. 27 and bought a train ticket for New York City.

Derek Brewington's father reported him missing to university police at 8:45 p.m. on Wednesday.

Cameron said university police consider the case closed.
