WCRD students win international honors

Station receives three Communication Awards for staff achievements

Three students from WCRD radio won Communicator Awards, an international competition that recognizes excellent work in the area of communication.

Senior telecommunications major Brett Estes won the Award of Distinction for Concert Spot. He submitted a concert promo called "Heavy Metal in Indy" that he made for an audio class, he said.

"I thought it was pretty good," he said. "I submitted something last year, but I didn't win."

After submitting his entry in October, Estes was notified that he won last week, he said.

"I was shocked when I won because I thought it only took a month to hear back, so I figured we didn't win," he said.

The radio station sent in six projects, Estes said.

Nancy Carlson, chairwoman of the Department of Telecommunications, said she was happy that the radio station won three awards.

"The fact that these students won three awards is representative of what these students at WCRD are capable of," she said. "It says that they're doing better at their college radio station than other students are doing."

Winning the awards may increase the number of listeners who tune in to WCRD, Carlson said.

"People who have never listened to 91.3 will tune in just because they found out about these awards," she said. "It will draw in listeners."

Carlson believes that integrating class work with extracurricular work, like Estes did, is a good thing, she said.

"That's a good example of where the line between class work and extracurricular work becomes fuzzy," she said.

Two other winners from Ball State University were senior telecommunications major Bill Boy and telecommunications graduate Alex Graessle. Boy won the Award of Excellence for Characterization for "AM Asylum Intro" and Graessle won the Award of Distinction for Station Spot for "WCRD.net."

Estes said the Award of Excellence is the highest honor. "It's pretty cool that [Boy] won," he said.

The Communicator Awards have been recognizing outstanding achievements in communication for 13 years, Estes said. Awards are presented for audio, video and writing, he said. The university will receive three glass, jade trophies, which will be in the hallways between the Art and Journalism Building and the Ball Communication Building, he said.
