Village tobacco store to close

Shop decorations, products available at discounted rate

The Little Havana - Tobacco Cabana in the Village will soon close its doors, building owner Shirley Staggs said.

Little Havana began cutting store hours last week and has been selling its store decorations and products, such as cigars, hookahs and speciality cigarettes, at discounted prices.

"According to their [Havana owners'] correspondence with us, they are going to try to stay open half days until they have decreased their inventory," Staggs said.

No date has been set for the closing, and no new business will move in for at least a couple months, she said.

A potential tenant has already shown interest in the building space, and Staggs said she is fairly sure the potential tenant will take the opportunity.

"It's someone who prefers to keep his business in the Village," she said. She would not comment any further on the type of business that might open.

Little Havana's owners, Mike and Terry Ballart, have not returned messages, and employees were unable to comment.

A majority of the shop's business was from students, and at least three students worked there at one time.

"I'm sorry to see the Little Havana close," junior Eddie Harnish said. "It sold quality cigars and tobacco, not the cheap gas station stuff. It was also a neat place to hang out, smoke and not be bothered."
