A Ball State University student was arrested under the suspicion of detonating a homemade explosive during Winter Break.
Freshman Andrew Wiebold, along with friend Andrew Burgess, was arrested Dec. 20 in Indian Hill, Ohio, after both men confessed to exploding a pipe bomb and possessing nine more, according to police reports.
The university is waiting until it has a copy of the police report and knows all the facts before it decides if Wiebold will go before a review board, Layne Cameron, Ball State media relations manager said.
"Everyone is reviewed on a case by case basis," Cameron said. "It has to be evaluated if the crime the student committed, if they are coming back to campus, is detrimental to the educational environment."
Wiebold declined to comment about the incident.
After seeing Wiebold's red Jeep drive by, a police officer heard an explosion and noticed a white cloud of smoke in the direction of the vehicle, reports said.
Wiebold lit the explosive while driving and handed it to
Burgess, who threw it out the window, Detective Watts of the Indian Hill police department said. Two minors were also present in the vehicle.
"After hearing the mild explosion, the officer made a traffic stop and questioned the people in the car," Watts said. "At first they said they had lit some fireworks, but after the officer had inspected the vehicle, he had found more explosives in the vehicle."
After receiving consent to search the vehicle, one of the reporting officers discovered nine more explosives in the center console between the driver's and front passenger's seats.
"We had to call in the bomb squad to defuse the explosives," Watts said. "We later searched the men's homes and confiscated any materials we thought might be used to make bombs, but we didn't have to take too much."
Wiebold and Burgess admitted to making, possessing and using the explosives, reports said. Both men also said they were involved with similar incidences using explosive devices, reports said.
Wiebold and Burgess were taken into custody for questioning and then transported to the Hamilton County Justice Center and later released without bond, Watts said.
After further questioning, police determined that one of the minors in the vehicle also possessed explosives.
