GYMNASTICS: Ball State drops first meet to OSU

The 2007 Ball State University gymnastics season kicked off Saturday at Ohio State University. Coach Lisa Simonton and her young Cardinals lost 185.175 to 193.625.

This season the Cardinals have 12 true freshmen on the team, and Simonton believes that a big part of this first meet was to get the freshmen in-tune with the upperclassmen.

"Our first event, uneven bars, were our Achilles heel for the meet, but I thought our freshmen really stepped up in that area," Simonton said.

Junior Kristen Sprague finished sixth on uneven bars and Simonton felt Sprague nailed both her routine and landing. The Buckeyes took the top five places in the floor exercise routine with Ball State junior Lauren West placing sixth on her floor exercise with a 9.575.

"The fact is that this was our first meet, and our freshmen had no idea what NCAA meets were like. We have gotten the all-important first meet under our belts," said Simonton.

Simonton added that Ball State needs to clean up the mistakes from its routines in the short break between now and the Kent State University meet on Friday.
