With former Ball State University volleyball player Christine Kennedy in the bleachers last night, the women's volleyball team kept their winning streak alive. Even though the team lost six games at home earlier in the season, the Cardinals went into this game with a perfect record against the Zips at Worthen Arena.
"I think we underachieved," Coach Randy Litchfield said. "We won 3-0 and that's nice, but I think Akron, for much of the match, outplayed us. If we are ever going to reach the level of a good team, we are going to have to play better at home."
The Zips never seemed to give up against the Cardinals, but Ball State let the numbers show that they were the better team. Akron was defeated by the Cardinals in three straight games, 30-27, 30-22 and 30-27.
Kelly McCormick had 15 digs in the first game alone. After last night the senior now has 2,137 career digs. The senior is also up for an NCAA digs per game average record.
"I didn't even know [I got my 2,100 dig tonight]. I had no clue," McCormick said. "Right now I'm just really excited that we won. Granted it was an ugly win, but we'll take a win right now."
Julie Breivogel continued to lead the team in kills. The freshman has a 3.36 kills per game average. The outside attacker is one of only two players to see playing time in all of the games this season, McCormick being the other. Breivogel has shown throughout the season that she is not the typical freshman, contributing 313 kills thus far.
"We had great matches tonight out of Kakatolis and Breivogel," Litchfield said. "I feel that we need upperclassmen to carry more of the load here in November. The pressure is getting greater, and I feel that upperclassmen are a major part of the winning formula."
Elaina Kakatolis also contributed 12 kills against the Rockets, a career high for Kakatolis.
"I think at times we did some things really well," McCormick said. "We've been working on a new set behind the setter. Elaina did really well. At times, of course we played really good volleyball, but more times than not we did not play that good."
The Cardinals go back on the road this weekend to match up against the Toledo Rockets on Saturday.
"I am feeling so far from confident [about the match against Toledo] that you cannot even believe it," Litchfield said.
