WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING: Team travels to Bowling Green for MAC meet

Freshmen valuable in distance events, seniors key sprinters

After a tough road loss last weekend to Miami (Ohio) University, the Ball State University women's swimming and diving team will travel again to take on the Bowling Green University Falcons Saturday.

Last season, the Falcons finished third, one place ahead of the Cardinals, in the Mid-American Conference Championships.

"I don't want that to happen again," co-coach Bob Thomas said. "I anticipate that our team wants to upset them this year because of the MAC meet and last weekend's loss to Miami."

Senior Mary Brinkoetter said she is impressed with the way the team has been able to score much needed points at meets this early in the season.

"Everyone has stepped up at one point in the season or another so far," she said. "We have some strong freshmen this year that have handled the transition to college swimming really well."

According to Thomas, Cooper Pool has nine foot lanes and the pool is 18 feet deep compared to the Lewellen Aquatic Center which has seven-foot lanes and is five feet deep at the deepest end. He believes that this might be advantage for his team

"A deep water pool allows the waves to dissipate better and it creates a faster swimming environment," he said. "We measure ourselves by time, so you can see minute changes in times depending on which pool you swim in."

Thomas also said that the team is healthier now than they were a few meets ago and they are still in the conditioning part of the season.

"[The team] still has a lot of room to improve and they are looking forward to going to [Bowling Green's] pool," he said. "They have a strong program and a strong team with a lot of depth. A win Saturday would be important but wins and losses are soon forgotten."
