Two Ball State University students were in stable condition at Ball Memorial Hospital on Thursday after being shot around 7 p.m. in their Windermere Place apartment.
Samuel Ghebremichael and Reggie Hill were attacked in Building 4 in what the Muncie Police Department said could have been a robbery.
At least one witness was in the apartment, and Muncie Police Sgt. Jason Webber said police were looking into a lead. He would not release any information on the suspect or suspects.
"It's an active investigation, so mum's the word," Webber said.
Hill was walking to his apartment when he realized someone was following him in, Hill said before entering surgery.
"I was just coming into the house, and he was right behind me." Hill said. "I was walking in from the car, and I had my keys in my hand, and this dude was right behind me."
A bullet hit Hill's right heel, and Ghebremichael was shot in the right shin, their surgeon said.
Ghebremichael entered surgery first, and Hill went in around 10:45 p.m. Their surgeon said both men were going to be fine.
Russtom and Selas Ghebremichael, Samuel Ghebremichael's parents, said they left from Indianapolis around 9:15 p.m. after hearing about the shooting.
Russtom Ghebremichael said doctors told him his son will stay in the hospital for a few days.
"They will keep him until Sunday, check him out and make sure he doesn't have some kind of infection," Russtom Ghebremichael said.
Russtom Ghebremichael said he didn't expect anything like this to happen.
"We thought it was a safe place when they moved from the dorms to an apartment," he said.
"I wish they could find [the suspect]," Selas Ghebremichael added. "This is really scary."
Ball State senior Melissa Fraser, who also lives in Building 4, said she came home to find a parking lot full of police cars and people.
"We are fine, obviously concerned because it's never a good thing to hear that someone has been shot right below you," she said. "I think we're just going be a lot more cautious over the next few weeks."
