OUR VIEW: Use caution

AT?ISSUE:?When it comes to potentially violent situations, act accordingly

Two students were shot at Windermere Place Apartments, a person was beaten up outside of a fraternity house and several Muncie businesses have been robbed at gunpoint - for Ball State University students, violence has been prevalent.

We realize we're the ones who report this information and can subsequently be criticized for making violence a larger issue than it is.

However, when it comes to causing people harm, even one violent act is too many.

Although the details of these incidents remain murky and under investigation, there's little argument that something violent took place.

Violent problems can start with stressful situations. Everyone deals with stress and tension, there are no surprises there.

Although no one wants to be in a violent situation, they are the times when knowing how to behave and handle yourself - and even help the people around you - is necessary.

People can, and should, be aware and cautious of the situations they put themselves into.

Drinking too much at a party can lead to dangerous situations. Being involved with drugs has the potential to increase violent acts. According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, 41 percent of violent crimes committed against college students in 1995 to 2000 were committed by an offender who appeared to be using drugs.

Some people try to get involved when they see a fight - either to encourage it or break it up. Either situation can lead to injury, neglecting the fight itself causing harm.

Situations with violence are going to occur - some can be avoided, and some are completely unavoidable. Knowing the difference between the two types of situations and how to act in both is knowledge everyone should have.
