OUR VIEW: Radiation of energy

AT?ISSUE:?Basketball season has potential as long as passion continues

With a new level of excitement, men's basketball kicked off its season at home against Northern Colorado on Saturday.

The energy and passion of a team with a new coach was evident for fans. The energy present at the game was an indication of this rejuvenated team's potential.

The energy level radiated from the Cards, the coach and the student section. Students who attended Saturday's game caught the energy level from the team, and, in turn, fueled the team even more.

The spirited students wore the free "Nest" T-shirts, drank free soda and waved balloons provided by the Athletic Department. The promotions were fun and helped raise the energy level as students yelled and waved their rally towels to cheer the team at every opportunity.

aBall State had 26 opponent turnovers, 12 steals, 23 offensive rebounds, two dunks and five Cardinals who scored over more than 10 points each.

In the 2005-06 season the men's basketball team never scored more than 78 points, and the average number of points scored during non-conference play was 63.5.

Saturday, the team scored 81 points. During the first game of the season, the team beat its record from last season by 3 points.

We realize the basketball team played the University of Northern Colorado, who was competing in its first Division-1 game. Saturday's competition was probably not the most challenging of the season. Even so, the team kept the game exciting for fans.

It's that excitement that should continue to lure students to the games.

With a revamped team, a new head coach and a student section loud, proud and full of freebies - this season has great potential.
