OUR VIEW: Proactive behavior

AT?ISSUE:?People should express their opinions about proposed increased cigarette tax

If Gov. Mitch Daniels' proposed 25-cent tax increase on the price of cigarettes goes into effect, it will cost someone $1.75 more each week and $91.25 more in a year if he smokes one pack a day.

This money would go to smoking reduction programs, child immunizations and less expensive health care for the uninsured.

Regardless what you think of the proposed increase, do more than sit back and talk about your opinions - go out and do something productive.

You can write your congressman or even Daniels. If you're opposed, you could start a petition.

There are pros and cons to this proposed increase.

The increase could give smokers a reason to quit or, at least, smoke less. It could also discourage younger people from starting to smoke. The people who continue to smoke will help lower-income residents get insurance, as well as pay for child immunizations.

On the other hand, the proposal would make cigarettes more expensive for those who make the personal decision to smoke. Retailers could also be hurt by the increase. Some critics of the proposal also say cigarette sales and health insurance are not related. They also question if the money from the increased tax will all go to health care.

Weigh the pros and cons of the issue. Make a decision. Take a stance. Make your voice heard.
