The full experience of Muncie, and of college, cannot be fully achieved solely by going to campus events and walking around the Village. There are learning opportunities that cannot take place in a classroom, at a football game or in a bar.
There are chances for students to expand their horizons and have new cultural experiences - they just have to venture downtown and look.
It is not only the Muncie community who contributes to the town-gown divide - students add just as much.
Events such as the Fall ArtsWalk and First Thursday are Muncie's attempts to reach out to the Ball State University community. These events can help to develop a relationship between the university and Muncie.
Anyone can visit the art galleries participating in First Thursday - the galleries are open more than once a month. There are a variety of restaurants and shops downtown as well.
Students complain that there is nothing to do in Muncie - but there is artwork, local music and the Muncie Civic Theatre. There is always something to do in Muncie - if students look outside of campus.
It's not a metropolis, but downtown Muncie offers an escape from the everyday academic grind.
