New wave of knitters prepare for holiday season

A new generation of gift giving has arrived. This year's holiday season will be filled with yarn of all types and needles of all sizes. Knitting has been arou nd for thousands of years and today it is a unique way to make inexpensive and personalized gifts.

Knitting is a craft that has been passed down from generation to generation.

"When I was little I can remember my grandma knitting and I always wanted to learn," Ball State Unviersity freshman Kayla Dickey said. Dickey's grandmother taught her to knit when she was in the 5th grade.

Knitting has become a way for college students to afford gifts for all the people on their gift list. One ball of yarn, known as a skein, can cost anywhere from three to ten dollars. Knitting needles range from five to fifteen dollars, depending on the size and make. That comes to no more than twenty-five dollars.

Once the supplies are bought, the next step is learning the process. Knitting is an easy process and is quite easy to learn.

"I want to learn how to knit because it is a cheap and inexpensive to make gifts for people," freshman Cody Ray Ramos said. "It's a lot more personal rather than going out and buying a gift for someone."

Books and websites are available to teach the basic techniques. Even those who see themselves as advanced use these outlets for help.

"I use knitty.com and Stitch n' Bitch to help me with new patterns," said freshman Aviva Eden, who has been knitting since she was 17 years old.

Even beginners can create some amazing gifts. The basic techniques will allow knitters to create a basic square or rectangle. This can be made into a potholder, scarf, iPod holder, drink cozy and countless other gifts.

Knitting is more than making things. For people like Katie Timm it is like therapy. Timm has been knitting since she was 15 years old and now knits slippers for Turning Point, a domestic violence shelter.

With the holiday season right around the corner, now is the perfect time to get some needles and yarn and learn how to knit.
