I am writing, as many others already have, to voice my opinion on David Horowitz.
However, I am not writing to criticize or support his views. I am writing to simply make a point. There are those who criticize Horowitz as a racist, sexist and a general black mark on society. It is not unreasonable to assume that some of these people are those who are on the far left side of politics.
Perhaps these people would be interested in knowing Horowitz was once a member of the far left. He was a staunch supporter of the Black Panthers. He was an outspoken critic of the Vietnam war. He was involved in groups who were clearly liberal groups.
It was not until he believed corruption set in that he changed sides on the political landscape.
Once again, this is not a letter supporting him. These are statements of fact. Yes, he said things that can be considered unreasonable, at best. Yes, he certainly has viewpoints that are extreme, and perhaps ungrounded in fact.
But, people like him also represent what is best about this nation: freedom. In many places, an individual such as Horowitz would not have the freedom or the ability to stand up and say how he felt. So rather than looking to silence him, we should look to combat people like him with intelligent, reasoned debate. It is also worth saying that being too liberal is also wrong. Some of the things that Horowitz says and writes are true, just as some things that a far-left liberal says are also true. More likely though, is that the truth, and the right way, lies somewhere between the two viewpoints.
Do not assume, as some of you probably already have, that I am a white conservative, with no understanding of the issues. I am a bi-racial man, who identifies himself as a Democrat. I come from a family and a background as diverse as any. I have researched Horowitz and his views.
The real question is this: When something like this comes up again, will you do your homework and argue with your brains, or will you argue with aggression, and make us all look bad?
