Dear Editor,
"No smoking within 30 feet of Building Entrance," is a sign posted on the doors around Ball State University that smokers are asked to follow. However, most smokers rebel against that rule because of the weather, like rain and snow, or rather just to sit down and relax. I happen to be one of those smokers. When I smoke a cigarette, I like to sit down and relax. I live in Woodworth Hall and it has a place that is nice to sit. It may be cemented, but I like the fact that I can sit down and rest my back up against the wall. A few times I have sat there to smoke, and for some reason, I always seem to get caught by one of the Resident Assistants. So, no matter how tired I am or what the weather is like, I am forced to walk 30 feet away from where I was comfortable and stand. They give us the option to stand or sit in the grass, which is not that bad unless it has been raining. The other smokers that have this same problem and I would much rather be comfortable and have our backs leaned against something.I do understand and respect the nonsmokers who do not appreciate smoke being blown around them, but smokers need to be respected too. A good way to show us respect would be to build sheltered areas to get us out of the rain and snow. Also, in the shelter, it would be nice to have something to sit on like a bench that has a back.
