FOOTBALL: Ball State kicker earns multiple MAC awards

Six Cardinals receive All-Conference honors for the 2006 season

Brian Jackson's postseason accolades continue to accumulate.

After being selected as a semifinalist for the Lou Groza Collegiate Place-Kicker Award, Jackson was named the Mid-American Conference Special Teams Player of the Year by the MAC News Media Association.

Jackson was 17-of-19 on the year in field goals and 37-of-38 on extra points.

"It's definitely exciting for me," Jackson said. "I wasn't really expecting it."

The All-Conference team, selected by the coaches, named Jackson to the second team. Eastern Michigan University's Andrew Wellock got the first team nod. Jackson's 49 career field goals are third all-time at Ball State University, and the senior holds the career mark for extra points with 111.

"I think that's great," Ball State University coach Brady Hoke said. "Brian has been nothing but a really consistent guy for us. We're going to miss him because of that consistency."

Jackson's counterpart, punter Chris Miller, garnered first team honors for the second consecutive year. Miller led the conference with a 46.26 yards-per-punt average, second in the nation behind Daniel Sepulveda of Baylor University.

"That's something that Coach Hoke harps on everyday," Jackson said. "He wants the special teams to be the best out of the three phases. It's so important that you can have another edge on a team. This school is known for their good kickers and punters. I'm sure there will be more to come in the future."

Three other players, defensive end Cortlan Booker, safety Erik Keys and wide receiver Dante Love were named to the second team.

Booker topped the Cardinals with 14 tackles for loss and added five sacks. Keys led Ball State with 90 tackles and tied a school record with four fumble recoveries this season.

Love caught 52 balls for 735 yards and scored four touchdowns.

Tight end Darius Hill was honored with an honorable mention. Hill hauled in 42 catches for 741 yards and 10 touchdowns this season, leading the Cardinals.

Quarterback Nate Davis was runner-up to Central Michigan University's Dan LeFevour for Freshman of The Year.

Northern Illinois' Garrett Wolfe won the Vern Smith Leadership Award, awarded to the conference's top player and the Offensive Player of the Year Award. Western Michigan University's Ameer Ismail won the Defensive Player of the Year Award.
