Flu shots to arrive within days

Vaccinations will be available at BSU health center for $29

As the last leaves fall to the ground and the temperatures drop below freezing, Ball State University students are starting to look for solutions to the flu.

The Amelia T. Wood Student Health Center has not had any flu vaccinations to dispense in the past couple weeks, but Kent Bullis, the medical director, said it should have about 400 doses in stock "within the next day or two."

Vaccinations are available to students for $29 and can be received during business hours, he said. The vaccination creates antibodies which begin fighting the virus immediately if a person becomes infected with the flu.

Flu season officially lasts from October to March.

The vaccine is between 80 and 90 percent effective in preventing the flu, Bullis said. Typically between 500 and 600 students receive the Health Center's flu vaccination, he said.

The flu vaccination has not been available for faculty or staff since 2001, Bullis said. In the past, the Health Center's supply of flu vaccinations was being overused by the staff, he said. To fix that, now only students can receive flu vaccinations.
