Ball State University will officially unveil its Indianapolis Center on Meridian Street at 5 p.m. with a ribbon cutting.
However, there will be no ribbon involved, President Jo Ann Gora said.
"They have been working on doing something unusual with digital technology to call attention to the fact that this is a high-tech center," she said.
Gora will be joined by Bart Peterson, Indianapolis mayor, and Tamara Zahn, president of Indianapolis Downtown, Inc. The event is invitation-only.
Stephanie Huffman, director of the outreach services site, said the ceremony will highlight the Indianapolis Center's partnerships with the American Institute of Architects, the College of Architecture and Planning and numerous city development offices.
While the grand opening occurs today, classes have been held at the center throughout its renovation phase that began in May, Huffman said.
To students, the ease of parking and central location in downtown are positive attributes of the Indianapolis center, Huffman said.
The goal of the Ball State Indianapolis Center is to provide a location for alumni and business partners within Indianapolis to interact with the university, she said.
"Professional development is a whole philosophy of lifelong learning," Huffman said. "Just because you graduate does not mean you can stop learning."
Courses at the center assist working professionals in adapting to the needs of their markets, Huffman said.
The classes within the graduate degree programs have the highest enrollment, she said. Classes in executive development, adult education, graduate teacher education courses and business administration are the classes commonly desired by the students, Huffman said.
Additionally, the newly-renovated Indianapolis Center has space which can be rented to host meetings or lecture series, she said.
Governor Mitch Daniels recently held a summit for more than 40 insurance representatives at the downtown location.
President Gora said the Indianapolis Center has been greatly received by the mayor, city and alumni.
"This is an initiative that was very fast track," she said. "We're very excited about it."
