I am writing in response to the article about the recent review of Student Government Association expenditures.
At first glance of the article's title, one would think that SGA is almost out of money until March.
Just one category of the annual budget was reviewed and reported, ignoring the "big picture." Each SGA slate that is elected starts with a budget of approximately $75,000.
The budget is broken down into a variety of different categories including, for example, an Executive Discretionary fund, co-sponsorship allotment and funds for communication.
The specific area that was reviewed was the Executive Discretionary fund, stating that two-thirds has been spent thus far. -á
Team Lisec took office in March 2006 and will serve a twelve-month term. Currently, Ball State University is in the middle of the semester, leaving approximately four months of the slate's term.
That means two-thirds of Team Lisec's term has been completed, mirroring the two-thirds spent currently in the discretionary budget.
It can be determined that one-third of the Executive Discretionary fund remains along with one-third of the slate's time in office.-á
Not only is the slate on track in regards to time in office, but it also displays excellent execution of available resources.
This year, Team Lisec generated three new incoming Freshmen Leadership Scholarships, along with providing free weekly advertising to current student organizations in the Daily News. In regards to "something important could come up," I believe a $2,000 cushion is still an ample enough amount to suffice any future need that could arise.
Monies from other budget categories can potentially be transferred into the Executive Discretionary fund if it is deemed necessary.
I would also like to note that more than $8,000 remains in the co-sponsorship section of the budget.
Co-sponsorship funds are determined by a separate selection committee, making sure that funds are being distributed to groups that meet all qualifications.
To date, SGA has sponsored more than 20 organizations in some form. The $8,000 is a sufficient amount to help student organizations, large or small, be sponsored at their events in part by SGA. -á
As a former member of the Homecoming Steering Committee, I know firsthand that a majority of the events during homecoming attracts some of the biggest audiences on campus.
SGA felt sponsoring the fireworks would be a great way to show pride in our school and also the students we serve.
I urge and encourage students and organizations to stop by our office and see how SGA can help promote your campus-wide event through co-sponsorship.
SGA is here to represent the students and best serve your needs.
Rest assured, SGA is more than qualified to properly utilize your funds. -á
