Royalty candidates compete in fashion show

Students show personalities through creative costumes

Ball State University students can come laugh at and cheer for friends dressed up in costumes and competing for the Homecoming crown tonight at Pruis Hall.

75 Homecoming royalty candidates and their dates will strut their stuff at the annual fashion show, before the group is cut down to 20 people at 7:30 p.m.

The show is made up of 42 queen and 33 king contestants, nominated by Ball State organizations. By the end of the show, however, only 10 will remain in each category.-á

The fashion show tradition started several years ago and became a fun activity for the contestants to show off crazy outfits, Abby Ronk, Homecoming committee royalty chairwoman, said. The outfits are Halloween-like and should reveal what kind of person the candidate is, she said.

"They all pick their own outfits," Ronk said. "We have all sorts of different costumes. We are adding a best costume award.-áPeople go all out for it.-áPeople have Hollywood-type stuff to Ball State-type stuff with inside jokes."-á

Members of the organizations, along with friends and family of the candidates, can attend the show to cheer contestants on, she said. Admission is $1.

"I think it's a really nice gesture to support whatever candidate your organization nominated," Ronk said.

This event recognizes students who are involved in Homecoming.-áIn the spring, organizations that want to be involved nominate a king and queen.-áStudents vote online in the fall to narrow the list down to the top 10 kings and queens.-áMore than 27,000 individual votes were cast this year, a record for the online voting, Kate Webber, Homecoming committee faculty advisor, said.

"There are so many different types of organization's candidates,"-áJessica Binklemen, Homecoming committee member, said. "It's really fun to have them all at the same place."-á

After the fashion show, the remaining candidates will go through an interview.-áThe scores from the show and the interview will be combined, and the winners will be announced at Air Jam on Oct. 19 at Emens Auditorium at 9 p.m.
