Ball State University's 2005 Campus Crime Statistics show very little change from the 2004 report. Ball State is a relatively safe school.
While the numbers look good, however, there is an important factor of the report to keep in mind: Not every incident that occurs is listed.
Only incidents that happen on campus are counted in this report. Anything that happens at houses and apartments is not included.
Incidents that Ball State deals with internally are not represented, either.
Then there are also circumstances that go unreported by choice of the victim. Rapes that are not reported cannot feasibly be included in the statistics. Thefts that go unreported cannot be counted, either.
But victim-focused crimes such as these need to be reported. It is understandable that the incidents are traumatic enough on their own and that filling out paperwork doesn't help. But victims need to report the crimes to protect themselves and would-be victims.
It is up to students to keep themselves and others safe.
In other words, use common sense.
Walk in groups, don't accept drinks from strangers and be aware of your surroundings.
The campus crime statistics give Ball State reason to be considered safe, but students must do their part to keep the numbers as low.
