OUR VIEW: Cultural awareness

AT?ISSUE:?Students must recognize significance behind campus events

We realize that if you are reading this, you are probably aware of the many events that took place around campus this weekend. And though you have been paying attention to your surroundings, there is a chance your friends haven't been.

What takes additional effort is to understand the significance behind these events. It's one thing to know. It's another to go.

It doesn't take much effort to pick up on events around campus. Groups often advertise their activities around the Scramble Light, in addition to posters and flyers across campus. Another resource is the events calendar on Ball State's Web site.

This weekend, there were several events on campus that had more significance than students might realize.

The Watermelon Bust is more than a big greek party. Money from the event benefits A Better Way and the American Red Cross. Participants raised between $8,000 and $9,000 with the event.

Spectrum's Drag Show had more than men dancing in dresses. There is deeper meaning behind Spectrum and the event - the program brought in more than $500 for the Damien Center, an Indianapolis organization that helps HIV and AIDS patients. Spectrum itself provides resources for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered students. It also organizes programs and works to increase awareness on campus.

The open shelter by the Scramble Light celebrates the harvest. Hillel, the Jewish student group, is raising funds for the Central Asian Institute and giving out information while in the Sukkot at the Scramble Light.

Benefit events such as these take place weekly around campus.

Above all, it's the involvement that makes the events worthwhile. Understanding the significance behind the events is what proves beneficial to both the sponsors and the participants and the charities they support.
