MEN'S TENNIS: Epkey brothers drop second-round match

The men's tennis doubles team of Joe and Jarrod Epkey lost in the second round of competition Tuesday at the All-American Tennis Championships, coach Bill Richards said.

The Ball State University duo won their first match against Benedikt Fischer and Amrit Narasimhan of the University of Memphis, 8-1. The brothers then lost in the next round to Bobby Cameron and Kaden Hensel of the University of Tennessee, 8-2.

"We missed a lot of easy balls that we should have put away," Joe Epkey said about the loss.

The loss eliminates the Cardinals from the tournament, held at the University of Tulsa. Aaron Philips was originally slated to compete with Joe Epkey but had to withdraw from the tournament with back pain.

Joe Epkey said he and his brother used to play doubles together but have not competed together in the last two years. He also said that they were ranked No. 5 in Division II doubles while at the University of Southern Indiana.

Joe Epkey also competed in a singles consolation match and defeated Marco Born of Middle Tennessee State University. Born is currently ranked No. 84 in the nation in individual standings.

"It's a big win for me," Joe Epkey said. "Anytime you can get a ranked win it's real good. I played really well. It's good to end singles on a high note."

The men's tennis team will continue play this weekend at the Louisville Invitational. However, Richards said Joe Epkey, Jarrod Epkey and Aaron Philips will not compete in the invitational. Richards also said he does not expect to make the trip to Louisville.
