The Homecoming Parade is a great idea and I'm happy we have it.
Having said that, the parade leaves behind a great deal of trash. In fact, many of the people who are in the parade spend their time throwing candy, passing out flyers, etc. Likewise, the people who attend the parade leave behind bottles, cans, newspapers and other trash.
All weekend University Avenue - in the Village and east of the Village - looked horrible. Apparently, whoever planned the parade did not plan to clean up after the parade. Consequently, the Village looked awful and trash blew from the Village into the surrounding area.
This bothers me as a homeowner in the area who already spends more time than I'd like picking up trash in my alley and yard.
Furthermore, as an employee and alum of Ball State University, I'm a little embarrassed that on Homecoming weekend, with alumni and visitors in Muncie, the Village, a hub of activity, looked literally trashed. And, to make it worse, a university-related event was to blame for it.
Whoever is in charge of the parade should also be in charge of cleaning up after the parade. It's not just irresponsible and unlawful - I think - to not do so, it's an embarrassment and sends the wrong message to the community, visitors, and all of those who have an interest in Ball State.
