LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Air Jam regulations do not discriminate against groups

I am this year's Air Jam Chair on the Homecoming Steering Committee. I am writing in response to yesterday's opinion article regarding Air Jam regulations. I would like to clarify the Air Jam entry and judging procedures.

Participants in Air Jam sign up on a first-come, first-serve basis and information was available at both the spring and fall information meetings this year.

Reminders about the meetings were sent to the entire student body and entry forms for all of the homecoming events were available on the homecoming Web site.

All groups, whether they are greek, residence hall or independent, are given equal opportunity to compete in Air Jam.

Homecoming Week is a student events week, so it would be unfair to discriminate against students who are not affiliated with a campus organization.

Winners are selected by a panel of judges who score each group on a variety of criteria.

Following the Homecoming theme is one of these criteria, and groups that do not do so receive a deduction, including groups that did not follow the "Cheers to 80 Years" theme this year.

Ideally, the committee would like for all groups to incorporate the theme into their routine, but since Air Jam is on a first-come, first-serve basis, the committee has no way of regulating each group's routine.

I apologize for any confusion regarding the entry and judging procedures for Air Jam.

On behalf of the Homecoming Steering Committee, I encourage all students interested in Air Jam and all Homecoming events to attend the information meetings each spring and fall, and also to visit the Homecoming web site, bsu.edu/alumni/homecoming.
