Pouring rain and a severe thunderstorm watch did not prevent students from supporting their homecoming king and queen candidates at the Homecoming Fashion Show Wednesday in Pruis Hall. With an approximate turn-out of 484 people, the fashion show was a success, Royalty Chairwoman Abby Ronk said.
Out of about 70 candidates, all sponsored by an organization they participate in, the top 21 were selected at the end of the show to continue on as candidates. Students had an opportunity to vote online from Sept. 25 to Friday. for these candidates.
Shari Denny and David Geiselhart, representing Painter and Whitcraft halls in the Studebaker West Complex, dressed up as a cowgirl and cowboy. They chose a western theme because of "Stu-West," Geiselhart said.
There was a twist to this year's fashion show, Ronk said. Before announcing the top royalty candidates, an award was given to the best-dressed pair. The Homecoming Steering Committee chose the three best-dressed couples. After the top three stepped forward, the audience chose the winner. Based on audience applause, the winners were Chris Peters representing Delta Gamma Iota fraternity, and Michelle Skinner representing Epsilon Sigma Alpha sorority, who dressed as the UPS man and his package.
Candidates Rachelle Reichert and Scott Barrett were nominated by Botsford and Swinford halls in Johnson Complex and dressed as Clark Kent and Lois Lane. The students living in the halls chose a Superman theme, and plan on decorating the halls with Superman comics, Barrett said.
"They made Superman T-shirts with Ball State in place of the 'S' as the logo," he said.
Barrett was among the top ten chosen to continue on as a royalty candidate. The other king candidates were Kris Rarey, Zac Davis, Tyler Clemens, Mark Mayhew, Brian Pigford, Drake Land, Rodney Blount, Loren Ray and Eric Rhude.
"I really don't know what to say right now," Clemens said after being announced as one of the top ten. "This was a lot of fun and I am really excited."
Clemens, who dressed as Robin in the Batman and Robin duo, is a junior who was nominated by Theta Chi fraternity.
There was a tie among the queen candidates causing a total of eleven to continue in the competition. They were Erin Whitfield, Raquel Burton, Whitney Kraus, Teri Whitaker, Allison Bamberger, Rachelle Reichert, Ryann Bogdon, Summer O'Dell, Kendra Ellington, Amanda Hummer and Lindsey Wilson.
O'Dell, one of the remaining candidates, was participating in her first fashion show at Ball State University.
"It was a real honor being nominated by my sisters," she said.
O'Dell, a sophomore, dressed as a redneck bride, and was nominated by Kappa Delta sorority.
The 2006 Homecoming King, Queen and their courts will be crowned on Thursday, Oct. 19 at 9 p.m. at AirJam in Emens Auditorium.
