Cards hope to soothe home struggles against pair of Michigan challengers

Team comes off four game streak of loses at Worthen

The Ball State University women's volleyball team needs wins in its final eight games of the season to maintain a .500 record.-á A few weeks ago, the Cardinals seemed to be on the right track with Amanda McCormick receiving huge recognition as CollegiateVolleyballUpdate.com's player of the week recognition and Kelly Cochran consistently putting up big numbers on the offensive and defensive side of the ball for the team.-á"We'll we're three and five, and our new goal is to be 11 and five at the end of the [Mid-American Conference]," Coach Randy Litchfield said. "Our goal is to win all eight matches.-á It won't happen because we say we want that to happen. There's a path to that, and it's through getting better."After last weekend, the Cardinals no longer have hopes of being MAC West Division champions.-á The team had to have beaten both Western Michigan University and Northern Illinois University to receive the title.-á Now, with only eight games left in the season, the Ball State team is taking each game very seriously.-á"[I] just want to have us be more consistent on each match," Julie Breivogel said. The Cardinals are disappointed with their play this season, especially Litchfield who still says that the reason why his team is not playing well at home is because of distractions.-á "Well, we've been a little better on the road than we have been at home, but this season has been a roller coaster," Litchfield said. "This has been a very unpredictable team, and just to assume that we are going on the road, we'll be good, is a false assumption. We will try to play better volleyball."Even though some of the team has not done as well as it would have liked this far, it still can regain its confidence in time for the post season."We just kind of settled into a mind set of trying to get better," Litchfield said. "I would doubt that our confidence is that high. I mean we have lost four straight matches, but that shouldn't get in the way of us improving our games. I think if we do improve, wins will be the result of that. If we win, confidence will be the result of that, and you don't fake confidence."This weekend the Team will play two road games starting tonight against Central Michigan and ending Saturday afternoon against Eastern Michigan University."We have to fight more to beat them," Breivogel said.-á "We want to go out and prove to them we can dominate on their home court."
