A window at the Atrium was cracked and another was broken at an off-campus house Monday night by clear, plastic, marble-sized balls, Ball State University Police said.
The first shooting was at about 9 p.m. in the Atrium, Sgt. David Bell said. The ball hit the window and cracked it. Graduate student Marecia Dewar and senior Neneh Conteh were watching TV right in front of the window that was struck.
"I thought someone threw a chunk of ice," Dewar said. "I thought, wow, what an arm."
The ball bounced off the window, Bell said, and no one was hurt.
Conteh said she was sitting on top of a table in front of where the ball hit the glass. If it had gone through, she said, it might have hit her.
"There was a car that kinda stopped, then something hit the window, and when we looked they were driving off," she said.
The women told Atrium staff about the incident and continued to watch "Girlfriends" and work on homework. They laughed and said they didn't know why they weren't scared and were staying at the Atrium.
An off-campus house, 101 S. College St., was hit approximately 20 minutes later by a similar object, Bell said. The ball broke through the window and ended up on the window sill, he said. The residents said they did not know who did it or if a car drove by during the shooting, Bell said, and again no one was hurt.
As of Monday night, there were no suspects in the shootings, he said. While he would not comment on what could have shot the balls, he said if they had struck someone without hitting something first to slow them down, the balls could have hurt someone.
