Apartment fest features food, games

As the leaves change colors and the weather grows colder, Ball State University Apartments is bringing residents together to celebrate the season at Fall Fest from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Scheidler Community Center.

Fall Fest is designed to promote unity and socialization within the Anthony and Scheidler apartment complexes, Sally Freistat, assistant director for University Apartments, said.

"There will be food and activities for adults and children," she said. "The weather will determine what activities we do."

University Apartments has many events throughout the year to encourage residents to get to know each other, Freistat said.

A welcome-back barbecue was held the first week of school, she said, and a luau was held in September.

Residents and their families will also have the opportunity to attend Minnetrista's Enchanted Luminaria Walk in December, Freistat said.

Planning for the events begins in August, Kyle Lineback, resident manager at Scheidler Apartments, said.

"This year is going to be a lot more activity-focused ... games, maybe a picture booth with a bale of hay, pumpkin painting and making s'mores," she said.

Fall Fest is the second most popular event with about 100 people expected to attend, Lineback said.

The end-of-spring yardsale, which gives university residents the opportunity to sell items they do not want to move out, is the most popular, she said.

To be eligible to live in the apartments, a student needs to have 63 or more credit hours or a spouse or be 23 years old.

Because of the wide age range of students living in the apartments, Lineback said the social functions are different than those offered in the residence halls.

"We have sections with kid stuff and parents know [the kids] can go over there and be safe," she said. "It allows the adults to connect with adults."

One reason the activity is sponsored, Lineback said, is because it gives residents a chance to see neighbors whom they may be too busy to see.

Event planning is done by the community council and the community aide staff.

Community council is equivalent to hall council in the residence halls, Lineback said.
