The Internet and cable television has changed the face of mass advertising, a partner at Yahoo! said.
Robert Smeriglio, who will speak today at 10 a.m. at the L.A. Pittenger Student Center, said advertising to a mass audience was a lot simpler when CBS, NBC and ABC controlled the majority of media.
However, since the market is more diluted with so many television channels and the Internet, advertisers have to be smarter in order to reach large groups of people, he said.
Smeriglio will speak about how Internet advertising has grown over the last four years, according to a press release from the Advertising Federation of East Central Indiana. Smeriglio will speak three times in Muncie, including two speeches back-to-back at the Roberts Hotel from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., with the first speech aimed at students and the second focused on Central Indiana advertisers.
Tammy Estep, director of external relations from Ball State University's Miller College of Business, said she hoped that students will get a better understanding of what companies are doing in terms of implementing technology on the internet.
"I think its an excellent opportunity for someone with a background in the technology and marketing industry," Estep said.
Smeriglio said he wants to share his passion with students who are going to be entering the advertising and digital worlds.
