AT?ISSUE:?Gora finds time, money to support library budget increase

For the first time in five years, the library is seeing a budget increase.

The university added $200,000 to the library budget to make this possible; this increase brings the library budget to $1,180,500. The increase was needed to cover the rising costs of books and journals, as well as inflation.

It's also a good example of how communication and effort between university officials can have positive outcomes for everyone.

University Senate's new governance system worked the way it was designed to, bringing attention to important matters without passing resolutions.

President Jo Ann Gora was able to find the money after faculty members expressed concerns about the amount of materials for graduate and faculty research. She took a proactive approach to solve a problem everyone saw.

And now everyone wins.

Instead of waiting for a resolution to be passed by University Senate, Gora went out and found the money. Burris Laboratory added an additional 50 students, decreasing the amount of money Ball State spends to support Burris and instead adding the money to the library budget. She then worked with business affairs to facilitate the moving of the funds.

Gora, along with University Senate, has played to the university's advantage a bureaucratic system that can execute ideas before resolutions finally pass.

By recognizing and addressing community concerns, the university is showing that it listens.

Think of what else we can accomplish.
