OUR VIEW: Communication breakdown

AT?ISSUE:?Better notification needed during construction for Bookmark Cafe

Efforts to open the Bookmark Cafe in Bracken Library are doing anything but rolling along.

The latest delay: food carts.

The opening of Bookmark Cafe has been postponed - again. This is the third time the opening has been delayed. In the meantime, students still cannot enjoy the cafe they were promised last spring.

Communication broke down, and students are the ones losing out. If the respective parties involved in this project expect it to launch and operate successfully, communication flaws need to be resolved immediately.

Arthur Hafner, dean of University Libraries, did not know about the extent of the delays. He said the only information he received was in an e-mail from Elizabeth Poore, assistant director of operations for Residence Hall Dining Services - on Sept. 8 - three days after the originally scheduled opening day and three days before the second scheduled opening day.

To be fair, many of the delays can be attributed to subcontractors missing deadlines and not faults within the university's control. While the departments work separately of each other, there's still no reason for the dean of University Libraries not to be kept up on the status of the project taking place in the main campus library.

Several workers have already been hired to work at Bookmark Cafe. Students are able to work at other locations until the cafe opens, but that isn't what they signed on to do.

Now a cafe that was originally scheduled to open on Sept. 5 won't open until at least the end of November. The opening date could even be pushed back again.

Project coordinators need to make sure that everyone is well informed from here on out.

Next time, it could be their fault.
