Military public affairs focus of lecture

Brigadier General will speak on U.S. communications

Brigadier General and deputy chair of public affairs Mari Eder will speak at Ball State University about what public relations can do to help in the war on terrorism.

Eder will speak tonight at the 28th annual Vernon C. Schranz Distinguished Lectureship at L.A. Pittenger Student Center in Cardinal Hall at 8 p.m. She will focus on how the United States is perceived by foreign countries. Whether or not America communicates clearly with the world will also be part of Eder's discussion Robert Pritchard, assistant professor of journalism, said.

"There has been a lot of work going into trying to increase information going back and forth between countries," Pritchard said. "It (Eder's speech) is going to be open to addressing the need to be more consistent."

Calculating both active duty and reserve time, Eder has been involved with the army for 29 years. Eder has served as an army public affairs officer and also worked as the director of public affairs at the George C. Marshall European Center for Security Studies in Germany, where she taught mass communications. Along with a master's degree in strategic studies from the U.S. Army War College, Eder has earned six Meritorious Service Medals, four Joint Service Commendation Medals, four Army Commendation Medals, the Joint Service Achievement Medal and the Army Achievement Medal.

Students will not be the only ones attending the lecture Kyle Glass, Schranz Lectureship coordinator, said. Because the Ball Corporation donates money to support the Lectureship, Ball employees are expected to attend, Glass said.

"There's so much more to it than just for students," he said. "I think the real practical knowledge is listening to a brigadier general talk. It's something you don't get to hear every day."

Eder will speak for an hour and will answer questions after the event, Pritchard said. The event is free for everyone.
