Greeks sponsor discussion

Brown bags, open forums let students talk about issues

To promote awareness about the effects of hazing, Ball State University Panhellenic and Interfraternity councils are participating in the second annual National Hazing Prevention Week.

The week is designed so greek communities across the nation take time to talk about issues concerning hazing and its prevention.

To discuss these topics, the Panhellenic Council and IFC are sponsoring an open forum today, and a brown bag lunch on Friday. Anyone from the Ball State community is invited to attend, as hazing is not specifically a greek issue, Lisa Browning, Panhellenic vice president of risk reduction and education, said.

Hazing is making a person feel uncomfortable and singled out in some way, Sarah Aldridge, president of the Panhellenic Council, said.

This is part of a series of open forums started by the Panhellenic Council when the executive board took office in January. The board wanted sorority women to be more informed about various issues, including hazing, Aldridge said.

"The Panhellenic Council and the IFC wanted to have open discussions to encourage everyone to give their opinions and thoughts," she said.

The discussions are not just designed for greek members, but other organizations around campus as well. Hazing is never accepted in the Ball State greek communities, Aldridge said.

It is not condoned at Ball State because it does not provide quality membership, Browning said. The fraternities and sororities have values they pride themselves on, and hazing does not go along with those values, she said.

The discussions held by the councils are good for the entire Ball State community, Browning said.

"Hazing does not just affect greeks, but the entire college campus," she said.

The open forum is today at 5:15 p.m. in the L.A. Pittenger Student Center Ball Room. Sororities will stay in the Ballroom and fraternities will go to the Forum Room for discussions after the forum. The brown bag luncheon is Friday at 11:30 a.m. in the Student Center Multipurpose Room.
