Led once again by the freshmen Sarah Kehe and Ali Bishel, the Ball State University cross country team took second place at the Bronco Invitational. Held at Pine View golf course in Kalamazoo, Mich. the Bronco Invitational featured three other Mid-American Conference rivals.
Western Michigan University was the overall team champion with a score of 34 points. Ball State finished second, two points behind the top spot. Eastern Michigan University followed in third, and Northern Illinois University brought up the rear.
Head coach Todd Lane was very pleased with the way the team competed against their conference foes.
"It went well, and the team looked much better than the week before," Lane said. "We stayed tough with Western Michigan and the whole team looked strong and finished well."
The Cardinals' placed themselves well in the front of third place, taking second, third, ninth, eleventh and twelfth individually. The overall winner was Kalli Williams from Eastern Michigan with a time of 18:04. Not far behind was Kehe (18:34) and Bishel (18:36.)
In addition to yet another successful showing for the Cardinals', the team welcomed back Sophomore Vanessa Gilbert, who raced for the first time all season and finished strong.
"It was exciting, Vanessa looked good the whole race, and we were actually surprised she was up as high as she was," Lane said.
With the small preview of the MAC Championship field, Lane now feels that the Cardinals' will be a force to be reckoned with in late October.
"Like I said with the injuries, if we get healthy we'll be competitive," Lane said. "With our two front runners and Rose [Lehe], who will, I know be up at the front soon and now Vanessa, we'll have a strong foursome."
