Career Fair brings job opportunities

Potential employers to interview students for jobs, internships

While summer internships and graduation may seem far away for many students, Ball State University's Career Center is already bringing companies to campus to interview, and possibly hire, students.

The Career Center is holding the annual Fall Career Fair in Worthen Arena from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. More than 140 companies and graduate schools will be at the fair, including Cingular Wireless, Humana Inc. and Walgreens.

Thirty-one representatives, a career fair record, will also recruit for graduate schools like Northwestern University, Clemson University and Indiana University, Sheila Spisak, associate director of the Career Center, said. Last year, only 17 graduate school representatives attended the fair. A booklet listing all the participants and activities at the fair will be available at the door to help students find their way around, Jeannine Harold, director of the Career Center, said.

Many companies will remain on campus to hold interviews on Thursday, while others will return later Fall Semester, Spisak said

A new system, CARD, is being implemted to track students who attend the career and job fairs. Students will swipe their ID cards when they arrive so the Career Center can collect data on how many people attended the fair and were hired or accepted by companies or recruiters, Harold said.

To help students prepare for their interview, the Career Center sponsored Job Search Jump-Start programs Sept. 6 and Wednesday.

The Career Fair's goal is to give students an opportunity to talk with employers and graduate schools that are looking for temporary help, employees and future students, Spisak said. The fair is open to Ball State students of all ages and majors.

With so many prospective employers in attendance, it's important to make a good impression, she said. Students should dress in casual business clothing, bring resumes, be polite and send a thank you card afterwards to maintain connections, Spisak said.

This is the first of three career fairs Ball State sponsors during the year, Harold said. The next one planned is the Sales Career Fair on Jan. 29.
