Peaceworkers, a student-based organization that is dedicated to promoting peace in the community and internationally,-áis sponsoring Peace One Week to increase issue awareness among Ball State University students.
The organization raises awareness on issues of discrimination and the war in Iraq, Mona Luxion, president of Peaceworkers, said.
The Center of Peace and Conflict Studies is helping to sponsor the awareness week. The center addresses the sources of war, social oppression and violence while promoting nonviolence and social justice through education, outreach and research, according to the center's Web site.
The week is an expansion of Peace One Day, Sept. 21, which the United Nations declared national peace and cease-fire day. The purpose is to educate more people about harmony in the world, Luxion said.-á
"What if we could stop, and have peace for one day, or one week, or one month what if?" she said. -á
The week includes a film, speakers and meetings. On Oct. 18, Peaceworkers is bringing Father Roy Bourgeois from the School of American Watch, an organization working on United States conflict in South America, to promote AIDS awareness.-á
