Cardinals defeat IPFW in season opener

The Ball State University women's soccer team started its season off on the right foot Friday night, beating IPFW 5-1 on the road. The victory gives the Cardinals an unblemished 1-0 record to begin the year.

The Cardinals got out of the gate fast, scoring 2 goals in the first half to take a 2-0 lead at intermission. Ball State outscored the Mastodons 3-1 in the second half to reach the final score.

Vandi Ogden, Laura Bandy, Amy Holst, Sarah Leibel and Katelyn Alexander all scored goals for the Cardinals, who out-shot theMastodons 15-4 on the game. Angie Heyera had two assists for Ball State.

IPFW was led by Heather Currie, who scored the Mastodons' loan goal off the bench.

Ball State will play Illinois State University on Sunday for itssecond game of the weekend.
