OUR VIEW: Taking its toll

AT?ISSUE:?Additional tolls would make it more expensive for students to return home

No one wants to pay more just to get home. With gas prices as high as they are, adding on other expenses is unnecessary.

Many Ball State University students have to travel on highways and interstates in Indiana to get home. By allowing the Indiana Toll Road to be ran by a source outside of the state, students and other Indiana citizens lose their input on the tolls.

The Austrailian-Spanish company that leased the Indiana Toll Road won't be accountable for unfair or extremely high toll prices. If the road were run by an in-state company, Hoosiers could express their concerns with the company or their legislatures at the polls. Now, we're going to pay whatever this company decides is fair.

Unfortunately, this problem might not stop at the Indiana Toll Road. Gov. Mitch Daniels has said he hopes to make the Interstate 69 extension a toll road and intends to outsource it as well.

Ball State has a large number of in-state students who are known for returning home frequently. By creating these toll roads, it will be more expensive for students to go home - and students have little input on how they're executed.

But students can do something now. They can express their displeasure today, before additional plans are put into effect. They can tell their legislatures they don't approve of another toll road.
