Corvette makes eighth appearance as pace car

Sunday's race to mark seventeenth showing for Chevrolet vehicles

Lance Armstrong, the seven-time winner of the Tour de France, is geared up to drive the 2006 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 pace car at this weekend's running of the Indianapolis 500.

The Corvette Z06 is the 17th Chevy to be announced as the pace car and the eighth time a Corvette will start the race.

"The Hulman-George Family and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway staff are honored that Lance Armstrong will pace the field for the start of the 90th running," Joie Chitwood, president and chief operating officer of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway said.

Armstrong's drive follows that of last year's pace car driver, former Secretary of State Colin Powell. Powell also drove a Chevrolet Corvette.

Although Armstrong was not at the unveiling of the pace car on April 4, he did shoot a video that was shown at the unveiling.

"My bike is easier to drive than the car," Armstrong said, referring to the pace car.

This year's Corvette has an aluminum frame, 505-horsepower and can go zero to 60 in 3.7 seconds.

"This car can go much faster than my Chevy Suburban," Armstrong joked.

The pace car has a red, white and blue flag design with white stars along the side and flashing lights on top.

But what's special about the car isn't the just the outside.

"The 2006 Corvette Z06 is infused with technology from our own endurance racer-the four-time Le Mans winning C6.R Corvette race car," Chevrolet General Manager Ed Peper said.-รก
