Junior Kallie Harrison rejoined the Ball State University women's golf team without missing a beat during this past weekend.
Harrison tied for third overall at the Illini Spring Classic after missing the Eastern Kentucky University Spring Invitational last week. Harrison's overall score of 149, a 74 in the first round and a 75 in the second, was best among the Cardinals playing this past weekend.
"I'm tremendously happy with Kallie's performance," coach Katherine Mowat said. "Especially in 30 mile-per-hour winds. She played well; I'm very happy with her."
The Cardinals finished eighth as a team, with team scores of 317 and 313. Ball State's 630 was 20 shots behind the winners of the University of Oregon. The positive the Cardinals were able to take from this tournament was that they finished better than their rival Mid-American Conference teams as they head to the MAC championships. Mowats said she was very pleased that the Cardinals were able to beat their rivals.
"That was great," Mowat said. "Those teams have beaten us in the past. It's a confidence booster to know that we can beat them."
The Illini Spring Classic was the last regular season tournament for the Cardinals this season and the last of the careers of the three Ball State seniors. Katie Sundberg finished tied for 26th with a two-round score of 158. Julie Harder shot a 165 and tied for 54th while Carmen Bodine finished 64th with a 168. Junior Amber Uphaus tied for 34th with a score of 160.
"Everyone did very well." Harrison said. "It was basically a Big Ten [Conference] tournament. I'm pleased with our performance."
The Cardinals head into the MAC championships ready to play. The tournament will begin on April 28 and run through the 30th at the Walden Ponds Golf Course in Hamilton, Ohio. Sundberg is the defending medalist of the tournament. Harrison thinks the two-week layoff with be good for the team and for herself as an individual.
"As a team, having two weeks off is a good thing." Harrison said. "We'll try to catch up with schoolwork and relax. For me, I'm very glad to have two weeks off as I'm taking the MCAT next weekend."
The MAC tournament will be a new experience for Harrison as she just transferred to Ball State from Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville this fall.
"I don't know what to expect, from what I hear Kent State [University] wins it every year," Harrison said. "I think we have a really good team this year. Hopefully we can get it together and play well. I think we'll have a good shot. I'm excited for my first shot [at the MAC championships]."
Kent State's team has won every MAC women's golf title in the league's seven-year history.
